You Have the Wrong Idea about Happiness

September 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness.  It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.

Helen Keller

Here’s that worthy purpose that Earl Nightingale talked about in another post.  We can see that happiness sure isn’t attained through self-gratification using food as an example.

I love BBQ potato chips.  Just love the taste.  If I could eat them every day, that would be wonderful.  But it doesn’t bring me happiness, especially when looking at the scales.  It may bring a momentary delight but not true happiness and lasting satisfaction.

You sure don’t get the sense of satisfaction and of a job well done from that as you get through doing something worthwhile.  That sense of satisfaction lasts, too, as long as you can look at the completion of the goal.  Even something as simple as looking at the new flooring you put down.  It may have been hard work and taken the whole weekend, but you did it!  That’s pride of accomplishment and certainly more than you would have gotten from spending the whole weekend watching TV.

But true happiness come from within.  What you determine is a worthy purpose comes from within you.  And your accomplishment of the same is what brings you happiness.  You have to determine what is the worthy purpose for you and then you have to remain true to that purpose.  By this inspirational quote, that is where true happiness lies.
