I think this quote is telling us not to hold ourselves back just because we are not the only ones who want what we want.  Yes, there are some things where only one person can be #1 right now but that doesn’t mean I should hold back.  And that doesn’t mean we don’t have an equal right to the thing we want.

I can just hear the negative self-talk trying to talk us out of what we want.  Winners have positive self-talk that tells them they can have the prize just like anyone else.  In fact, I bet their self-talk tells them they are better than anyone else trying to win the prize regardless of whether it’s factual or not.

I also think there’s a bit of the scarcity concept floating behind this quote.  Just because other people want the same thing I do doesn’t mean we can’t all have it, at least the ones who focus and put all their efforts into attaining it.  Even with winning a sports prize or coveted corporate position, there’s always next year to be #1 or another place to achieve it.

The point is to have complete faith that you can and will have what you want and that you have as much right to what you want as anyone.  Don’t be self-effacing and sacrificial.   Go for it with a strong belief.
