Worry a little bit every day and in a lifetime you will lose a couple of years. If something is wrong, fix it if you can. But train yourself not to worry. Worry never fixes anything.
Mary Hemingway
This quote has already helped me today. Nasty weather outside with snow as you go further north. So I was worrying if my husband had made it to work OK. I called him and in our talk I told him to send me an email every morning when he gets to work. That is a fix that will stop me from worrying about him and his safety.
I may have to implement a phone call from my daughter when she reaches school, at least in the worst weather. The same for my son as well until he moves out. Since his job entails being on the roads anyway, I may just have to work on not worrying.
In the meantime, I am working on developing the habit of determining if I can do anything about the thing that is bothering me. “What can I do to fix this?” If there’s something, I will take that action. If there is nothing, as is often the case for other people’s actions, then I tell myself, “Nothing you can do. Let it go!”
I admit I have a lot of work to do on letting it go but I am working on it. Sometimes the best response is just to think, “Oh, well,” with a shrug and to stop myself from thinking about it, by distraction if necessary. Of course, my distraction of choice is a good book.
