Worn Into Grooves by Time…

March 25th, 2008 · No Comments

We’re worn into grooves by Time - by our habits. In the end, these grooves are going to show whether we’ve been second rate or champions, each in his way in dispatching the affairs of every day. By choosing our habits, we determine the grooves into which Time will wear us; and these are grooves that enrich our lives and make for ease of mind, peace, happiness - achievement.

Frank B. Gilberth

Do we carry on through our day taking the actions of champions or of the “also ran”? What have our habits made of us?

I almost didn’t journal today as I didn’t sleep well and am having a hard time thinking. But my habit is to journal five days a week. It just didn’t feel right to not do it.

Think about what other habits you, or I, have and what type of actions they make us take. Every morning I do a lot of writing and today I’m rebelling against it. This writing includes writing down my goals - lifetime, yearly, weekly and today’s to-do list - plus journaling and affirmations. But I did it because I know all this writing keeps my goals in my face and because it didn’t feel right not to do it. That’s the power of habit.

It makes us take action without even thinking and makes us feel wrong if we don’t take that action habit says we should. Just try changing your morning routine after getting out of bed, even if it’s just the order in which you typically do things.

That is why it is so important to choose and create our habits wisely. It is so hard to break them. Our habits have created grooves in which we travel.

I read a book once in passing that talked about creating one new good habit a month. By the end of 12 months, you would have 12 new good habits. Chosen wisely, they could lead to an improved you (and me), a successful career or business, a better family life, etc. Our habits are what make us.

This looks like a good place for one of Aristotle’s inspirational quotes:

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

Choose excellent habits.

Note: I will be taking a small break and will not be posting on Friday, 28 March, or Monday, 31 March, as we will be out of town visiting family. But I will still journal in my notebook.  It’s a habit.
