Words So Important They Cannot Be…

March 26th, 2008 · No Comments

“Why” and “How” are words so important that they cannot be too often used.

Napoleon Bonaparte

Of the Kipling’s six serving men, I agree that these two are perhaps the most important. They are certainly the most important when it comes to setting your course of action. No matter what goals you set, if your why is not strong enough, you will be swayed away from it by any little thing that comes along.

Nietzche is quoted as saying,

He who has a why can bear almost any how.

So is your ‘why’ strong enough to bear the ‘how’? Do you even know your ‘why’? Maybe there’s something to be said for writing down a specific ‘why’ any time you set a goal. We are told to make our goals S.M.A.R.T. Maybe we should be smart and know the real why.

And that ‘why’ should come from within us, not be levied by someone or some thing outside us, even if those inside ‘whys’ seem selfish. What’s wrong with that?

If the reason you want to lose weight is not because the doctor says you should but because you want to have admiring looks again, instead of disgusted ones, or to able to wear certain cool clothes, then your ‘why’ will surely be stronger.

Hopefully, it is strong enough to get you through the ‘how’ you will achieve your goal. ‘Hows’ can take time. They will certainly take effort. And you need to ask, “How?”, so that you will know just what you are in for.

“How” is the basis for any plan and “Why” will see you through it, if it is strong enough. Maybe writing those ‘Whys’ down daily is a good idea to help focus on your goals and lifetime priorities. I know it is helping me by refining each, making me think about them daily, and keeping them in my face each day.
