Who Shall Prepare Himself…

April 1st, 2008 · No Comments

For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle.

I Corinthians 14:8

Mike Brescia used this quote as a jumping off point to discuss expecting more, expecting the best, from ourselves and those around us. He asks the question, “Do I expect of myself all that I am capable?”

He also brings up the Pygmalion effect based on a study done by Robert Rosenthal. Mike says we can use this effect for the good or for the bad based upon what we expect from the people we interface with and what we expect from ourselves.

Do we expect the best? Or do we expect mediocrity?

Going back to the quote - if the one calling us into battle does not sound sure, how much are we going to expect and how much are we going to bring to the battle? Our finest effort? I doubt it. We want to charge into battle with trumpets blaring the “clarion call”. We need to give it, whatever it is, our best shot.

Now, getting away from the battle analogies, do we approach each day with all our best, expecting our best and expecting the good? Do our habits and our actions taken each day lead us to excellence? Are they aimed at getting excellence from us?

Expect the best! Expect excellence! Send forth a strong, clear sound and rally the troops to their best effort each day!
