When we learn to give thanks, we are learning to concentrate not on the bad things, but on the good things.
Amy Vanderbilt
Well, this inspirational quote pretty much says it all. Being grateful focuses your attention on the good stuff and with your focus there, you’re more likely to attract good stuff into your life.
It doesn’t matter what is happening in your life or what is going on around you. Gratitude will help point out the good things you do have.
I’ve talked about this in other posts and it’s no doubt all over the Internet and in most of the self improvement books we read. Gratitude is one of the best tools in the personal development toolbox.
Even if being grateful doesn’t change what is happening on the outside, it’s bound to change what’s going on inside you. And a grateful heart and more peaceful spirit will just make you feel better. It can even help give you a cooler head with which to think through whatever is happening in the outside world.
To quote Mike Brescia of Think Right Now, who writes the essays to go with the quotes I’m reading and journaling about now,
…remember that you are bigger than any of it. You can go on with dignity and overcome all of it. One peaceful, smiling, serene and grateful minute at a time.
Isn’t that a good way to handle things? Much better than anger or fear or any other “negative” emotion we might feel. That’s what gratitude does.
