True leaders are hardly known to their followers. Next after them are the leaders the people know and admire;
after them, those they fear;
after them, those they despise. To give no trust is to get no trust.When the work’s done right, with no fuss or boasting, ordinary people say, “Oh, we did it.”
Lao-Tzu
True leaders are the ones who work quietly behind the scenes. They are the ones who do things because they need doing, not for whatever glory or fame they could receive. In fact, they usually deny it. They see what needs to be done. They do it and in the doing, others see and follow.
True leaders trust in the right thing being done by people but they don’t wait for some politician or Hollywood star to decide it needs to be done. They are the ones that accomplish more with a gentle nudge here and a quiet word there or by simply standing up for what is right. They praise the work of their followers and lead them so quietly that those same followers end up thinking they accomplished it all by themselves.
Those are true leaders. Not the ones who call themselves leaders simply because they hold a public office or simply because they play sports or act in movies and for some reason, command millions in payment. Though the media makes a great deal of these so called leaders they are not true leaders. Sometimes they do fall within the category of “leaders the people know and admire” but one must be very careful of whom to admire and follow among these.
True leaders are not despised or feared like the many petty tyrants and dictators this world has seen. Such leaders give no trust to the people they supposedly lead and get no trust in return. In fact, most have elaborate safeguards and palace guards in place to protect themselves from the people they lead.
