You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Whenever an opportunity rises to do a kindness for someone, take that opportunity now. If you wait, the chance may pass.
Who knows what ripples your kind act will have created? Who knows what darkness your kindness could have averted that will happen if you fail to take the chance?
The other part of this inspirational quote addresses the fact that you never know what’s going to happen or how soon. You can lose a chance. If you fail to tell a loved one, “I love you,” today it could be too late to wait till tomorrow.
My son passed up on an opportunity a few years back to go visit his grandparents. His sister was taking along her then fiance and my son didn’t want to be around him as much as the trip would have required. Furthermore, he was staying as a kindness to me to help me with the livestock and chores. After all, they went every summer to see his grandparents.
Unfortunately, there was not to ever be another summer trip as his grandparents died in an auto accident the next month. It was too late to do the kindness of a visit (although he did a kindness to me which I was so grateful for at the time). We just never know when it will be too late to be kind.
Yes, I know such a thing could have happened at any time throughout the year. The point is to take time to be kind. And be kind with yourself as well. Don’t put that off either.
