No one lives long enough to learn everything they need to learn starting from scratch. To be successful, we absolutely, positively have to find people who have already paid the price to learn the things that we need to learn to achieve our goals.
Brian Tracy
There are certain things you do have to learn from scratch such as learning to walk. But with most everything else in the realm of knowledge and learning skills, you are ahead by learning what you can from someone else.
You can learn where others went wrong and how they overcame certain obstacles. You may find new obstacles as you put what you learn into action, but if you pay attention you won’t have to go through the same ones they did. You’ll know how to get around them and that will put you ahead.
I know a young man who professes that you just have to learn everything for yourself. The only way to learn something is to do it yourself. You can’t learn from a book.
In some ways, he has a point. You do have to take what you learn and put in into action to learn real competence with your knowledge.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t learn from the experiences of others. Indeed, he used to listen to the likes of Zig Ziglar and Brian Tracy who this quote above is from. I’ll just put it all down to him being young and male and his family influence.
I think what it really comes down to is his family believing that you just don’t get a lot from “book learning”. You have to have experiences. Books aren’t going to teach you anything. You have to learn it yourself. And with that reasoning his family never will get ahead much (be “sucssessful”) or improve their lives. They will miss out on so much. But then, maybe they don’t want to “get ahead” and that is their choice.
