Nothing of great value in life comes easily. The things of highest value sometimes come hard. The gold that has the greatest value lies deepest in the earth, as do the diamonds.
Norman Vincent Peale
Normally I don’t disagree with the inspirational quotes that I journal on but this time I think I will. While there is value in this quote, some of it is wrong, in my opinion.
I do agree you won’t get much of value sitting on your butt doing nothing and “taking it easy”. But I don’t believe that the things of great value only come the hard way.
The gold that the ‘49ers found in the streams was just as valuable as that that was found by digging deep mines. It’s just that the easy pickings went fast. Gold found deeper in the earth is more expensive due to what has to be done to get it, but not necessarily more valuable. In fact, I know of a mine in Colorado that is a tourist destination simply because the gold was not valuable enough, at the time, to pay for the expense of doing the digging.
Could it be that we only value that which we have to work our tails off to get? If you talk to some of the successful people, they will say they work hard to get the success they have. But others will tell you they don’t work hard at all. In fact they love what they are doing and have systems in place to make the work easier. They don’t call it work.
Besides, one person may value only the material things while another values a simple place and being able to learn daily. It is up to the individual to place value and it is up to the individual to decide if what he values comes easily or comes hard.
