A story is told in self improvement circles that goes along with this about the pot full of lobsters.  As one tries to escape, the others grab it and pull it back into the pot.  None escape and eventually you have a nice lobster dinner.

People don’t like to see other people do well as a general rule either.  Most seem to not want anyone else to get out of the pot.  I think that goes back to the lack mentality so prevalent in our world.

If someone else gets ahead, then there’s less of the pie for others.  I don’t believe someone else getting ahead means there’s less chance for me.  I think this lack mentality is also why so many nasty things are said about people who do really well.

If you go to church, think about what is said about the better off families.  “They just come to show off.”  “They’re just here to try to drum up business.”  Probably nastier things are said as well.

So I think ol’ Zig is right here.  Some people are just going to do their best to critize successful people and even people who try to make their lives better.  As hard as it is, we need to learn to shrug it off the criticism.  “It’s none of my business what your opinion of me is.”  I have too much work to do to waste time worrying about and being distracted by what anyone else says.

So get to work.
