The Happiness Habit

October 26th, 2009 · No Comments

Being miserable is a habit.  Being happy is a habit.  The choice is yours.

Tom Hopkins

Our response to anything is always up to us.  The choice is ours.  I like the thought in this inspirational quote that being miserable or happy is a habit.  I know I can change my habits.  It just takes focused disciplined action until the change takes place.

If I am miserable or angry most of the time, then that is just a habit.  It is my habitual state.  First, I need to decide if I want to change that habitual state.  Surprisingly some people prefer to be miserable or angry.  I need to make a decision for change if that is really what I want and not just something I say so I can complain and be miserable.

Next, I need to know how to make the changes in my habit of being miserable.  In my opinion, it’s easier to start adding small things to my daily routines that will have the outcome of me being happy.  The more time I spend doing those, the weaker becomes the habit of being miserable and the stronger becomes the happiness habit.  The small things I add will take over the time I spend with the things that create the habit of being miserable.

I suppose there are lots of ways to start creating the habit of happiness or contentment.  One way I have talked about many times before is simply taking time out several times a day to be grateful.  I think adding some meditation time will also help.  Be sure to add at least a few minutes every day to spend time doing one thing you really love.  For me, that would be making sure I read a little bit every day and converse with my husband a little bit regardless of how busy we get.

Slowly, step by step, the habit of being miserable can be overcome with the happiness habit as it becomes stronger and what we spend time doing.
