The longer we dwell on our misfortunes, the greater is their power to harm us.
Francois-Marie Arouet aka Voltaire
The longer we dwell on them, our misfortunes, means the longer we are giving them our attention and focus. Anything given attention tends to grow. I do NOT want to grow my misfortunes. I do not want to make them larger or to attract more misfortune into my life.
Therefore I will try all kinds of things to get my mind off them.
One I have been using a lot lately as a result of journaling on this quote is to keep telling myself, “What’s done is done. You can’t change the past.”
I also admit to myself that I can’t change other people when they aggravate me so there’s no point in dwelling on the aggravation. What’s done is done. Let it go and get over it. I can’t change them. Neither can I change my present circumstances right now that are a result of actions I took in the past.
Better to decide what I do want, concoct a plan, focus on it, and take action resulting in making the misfortunes and aggravations even more a thing of the past. Focus and dwell on my vision of what I want, the person I want to be, and my actions I should take to get there is the way to increase the power of that vision.
