You are a distinct portion of the essence of God in yourself. Why, then, are you ignorant of your noble birth? Why do you not consider whence you came? Why do you not remember when you are eating, who you are who eat; and whom you feed: do you not know that it is the divine you feed; the divine you exercise? You carry a God about with you.
Epictetus
How marvelous that a man born a slave and who was not freed until he was 35 could realize we each carry the divine within us. Funny how I grew up learning that God was omnipresent but still was taught He was a separate being “up in Heaven”.
Why did we never realize that omnipresence means everywhere which includes within us as well as within a blade of grass? What we feed ourselves is of the divine as well. Why are we so ignorant that the divine is within us all, and around us and in all that is around us? We are star stuff. We are noble born and we should start to treat ourselves that way.
Would you berate the divine as you berate yourself? Begin to talk to yourself more gently and kindly for you carry the divine within.
And don’t use negative self talk. Would you complain to God if he was truly right in front of you? Ok, maybe some of us would still complain about the “bum’s rush” we got, but would that be the kind of impression you would want to make on someone important, to complain to them? Then why do we complain and use negative self talk?
Would you not take care of God as you do not take care of yourself? You body is indeed a temple that holds the spark of God. Why have I done the things I have done to this temple? I, now knowing more, must endeavor to put things right.
If only we were truly taught these things as children. If only I had been wise enough to teach my own children when they were young. “If only’s” don’t get us anywhere, though, and so I must work from this point to recognize that we are all divine and so too is all that surrounds us.

Great Post!!!
The only problem with this for some people is their own current belief system, which in my opinion has been abused. Like anything abused, in order to bring it back to life again, or to restore it if you will, there needs to be alot of love, unconditional love.
So how do you bring this message that there is a God within them and have them realize it without going through a pholosphical debate let alone a theological one?
The answer is within what you are trying to bring out in them, the GOD IN THEM.
With God, who is an INFINITE BEING, there’s no way a FINITE BEING can give you blue print to BRING OUT THE GOD WITHIN YOU…YOU WILL HAVE TO ABSOLUTELY TRUST IN THE ABSOLUTE TO GUIDE YOU IN THE WAY OF BRINGING IT OUT OF AN ABUSED BELIEF SYSTEM OF ANOTHER PERSON…

I like your idea that the belief system has been abused and needs lots of love to restore it. Even then, it can be old conditioning will always rear up. You can see this in a dog that was rescued from an abusive, or out of a bad situation, and even after years of love, the old cowering will still be there. Guess that just goes to show we must endeavor to watch our reactions and try to create a space between stimulus and response as Covey has said in his books.
