Sometimes we stare so long at a door that is closing, that we see too late the one that is open.
Alexander Graham Bell
How many conversations have you had or how many times have you thought, “I wish I had gotten into ______ back in the 19__s when it was so easy to make money hand over fist?” There was the “no money down” real estate of the 80s, the soaring stock exchanges of the 90s and early 2000s, and even buying domain names that now go for hundreds of thousands of dollars or millions.
Sometimes I wish we had moved to Colorado and bought up tons of real estate in the 70s or even during the ‘89 - ‘92 time frame when foreclosures swept the area and housing was cheap. The place is booming now!
But every time we spend even five minutes thinking about those past chances, those closed doors, we aren’t keeping our eyes searching for the new doors that are opening. And if we don’t we won’t get in on those open doors; we won’t even see them till they start closing.
I do think it takes a different way of looking at what is happening than most of us are trained to do. So we need to learn that different way of seeing, being prepared, and then keep our focus on looking for the doors that are opening.
Realize that this does not just apply to making money. It can also apply to opportunities for relationships and making friends. It can apply to other areas as well. We just need to keep looking for the door that is opening and not focus on the one that is closing or already closed.
