Stand up to your obstacles and do something about them. You will find that they haven’t half the strength you think they have.
Norman Vincent Peale
This is an inspirational quote if I take the bit about obstacles only having half the strength to heart. However huge and insurmountable an obstacle may seem to me, if I remember this quote and proceed to take action on the thought that it isn’t as bad as I think, then I just might be able to climb over that obstacle or otherwise surmount it.
The trick I think is reminding myself of this, that the obstacle isn’t really as bad as it seems. Maybe this, too, is a good place for possibility thinking to come in.
What if that obstacle wasn’t there? Would I pursue this path? Will it make a difference in my life? How can I act as if the obstacle wasn’t there? What are ways around it rather than going through it? What other paths will get me to my goal? What can I do to make this obstacle smaller, to break it down so it’s easier to remove? Who can help me? Possibility thinking starts with questions and a belief that anything is possible.
So let’s say I follow the advice of the above quote and stand up to the obstacle. One way I can do this by beginning to take action and with my possibility thinking. After all, once I take action I may be able to better see how to proceed. Hopefully, then I will find the obstacle just wasn’t all that much of a roadblock after all.
