Sorrow is a Blessing

September 28th, 2007 · 3 Comments

I saw grief drinking a cup of sorrow and called out, “It tastes sweet, does it not?” “You’ve caught me,” grief answered, “and you’ve ruined my business, how can I sell sorrow when you know it’s a blessing?”

 Jalaluddin Rumi

The falls of our life provide us with the energy to propel ourselves to a higher level.

Kabbalah

Sorrow as a blessing that tastes sweet. That’s almost hard to buy at first glance. Dyer essentially says there is a lesson or blessing in every sorrow. I think that perhaps it’s more than that.

Perhaps it’s that the blessing is that sorrow gives us a chance to look back and find all the pieces that we should be grateful for. When a parent dies, there is immense sorrow. But it is also a time to stop and express gratitude for all the things you remember. It can allow you to see things in a new light.

So, too, can we look for it in the sorrow of what is commonly called a failure, be it in business, a relationship, or something else. Try to see the lesson or blessing of the failure. Look at and be grateful for all you’ve learned. At the very least, you’ve learned what not to do and can try again with this experience behind you showing you what not to do.

Is sorrow a source of motivation or a hinderance? I ask it as a rhetorical question but the answer clearly lies in your blog post.

Sorrow is typically so closely linked with depression and sadness that we can often lose sight of the good that can come from it. As you said, it can open up new perspectives, allow for reflection, and teach you a lesson.

Sorrow allows us to express our passion and fury in both a healthy and a socially constructive manner. Sorrow is transient, as it should be for the reason stated above.

We shouldn’t hang on to things that beg to be set free. We have to just let go.
    Sorrow is healing.

Reminds me of a Poem by Dickinson

    SUCCESS is counted sweetest
    By those who ne’er succeed.
    To comprehend a nectar
    Requires sorest need.
