Getting an idea should be like sitting down on a pin; it should make you jump up and do something.
E.L. Simpson
Thoughts do proceed action, so getting an idea should lead to something being done even if just recording the idea for the future or a better time. Many successful people keep a recorder or pad and pen by their bed so that they can immediately record any ideas that come to them, even in the middle of the night. Even I have occasionally gotten up to write an idea down before I forgot it though I am not someone who could be classified as successful by most people.
However, when it comes to taking further action, as we learned in yesterday’s quote, sometimes we just keep thinking about the idea and don’t take that action. Maybe that’s where all the “should’s” in this quote come into play. It should work that way but doesn’t for most people.
So how do you get it to work that way? Maybe the answer lies in another inspirational quote,
Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
Maybe we need to create the habit of jumping up and doing something for every idea we get even if it’s just to record the idea in some way. Maybe that’s the first habit to create. Then a habit to look at the notebook every week to pick a project to work on is another we need to create. Who knows? We just might have some new habits in a few months that will lead to more success.
