Set a Goal…

January 30th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Set a goal to achieve something that is so big, so exhilarating that it excites you and scares you at the same time.   It must be a goal so appealing, so much in line with your spiritual core, that you can’t get it out of your mind.  If you do not get chills when you set a goal, you’re not setting big enough goals.

Bob Proctor

I hate to disagree with someone who obviously knows more about personal development and goal setting than I, but I’m going to.  The idea of having a huge exhilarating goal is exciting but it doesn’t seem to be in keeping with the goals most people want.

Maybe I am wrong but it seem most people want to lose weight, start a business so they can quit the job, spend more time with the family and “get rich” without having any idea what that means other than not having to work and buying lots of stuff.  There are always the goals of travel and getting into a good relationship.  Hmmm, those do seem pretty pedestrian but they are generally what most people want.

Maybe having very big goals work for some people, but I am of the persuasion, these days, that small steps are the way to go.  I don’t know about anyone else but as much as I love planning, I have a problem with the middle steps.  I can usually see the next few steps that are needed and can usually see the end goal as I wish it to be.  But those in between steps are the ones I have problems with.  That is why I believe in going as far as I can and then I will see how to proceed from there.

Back to the quote.  It could be that a goal so big it scares me does just that - scares me into doing nothing.  I don’t even know how to progress with a goal like that and it becomes a vague nothingness I feel I can never reach.  Maybe there are people this works for and I wish them luck.

I completely agree, while I think that having big long term goals are important, setting small reachable steps evey day is the way to go. Otherwise, it can get too overwhelming and you just end up quitting.
