Sense of Urgency

December 16th, 2009 · No Comments

Everyone should have a sense of urgency - it is getting a lot done in a short period of time in a calm confident manner.

Bob Proctor

I don’t quite agree with this quote but that could just be the negative way I’m looking at it.  To me, a sense of urgency at first implies something is wrong and I have to do a lot of stuff, or something at least, in a hurry to try to fix it.  Much like when the water pipes broke the other day and water was spewing everywhere.

If that’s the case, I am not working in a calm confident manner.  I’m an excitable sort of person although calmer than some people.

We had a coyote go after the livestock recently.  Most were able to get away but one wasn’t.  She was going round and round with this coyote trying to keep her horns aimed at its head and protecting her.

My first instinct was to run outside hollering.  I knew my son would get a rifle and he’s a better shot than I am.  I wanted to distract the coyote and it worked enough for the goat to get away.  But I was still hollering and all excitable when my son was finally ready to shoot.

So, although it might have been better to grab boots and head for a gate I could go through instead of hollering over the fence, I did do something that helped.  It just wasn’t in a calm confident manner but there sure was a sense of urgency trying to save the goat’s life.

A sense of urgency doesn’t help me in my day to day either.  Instead I prefer Zig Ziglar’s take which has a more positive connotation to me.  Act as if you were leaving for a vacation the next day.  You are excited in a positive way and full of energy.  It’s amazing how much you can get done.  And it’s true if you think of how you act the day before leaving for vacation.
