People of character do the right thing, not because they think it will change the world but because they refuse to be changed by the world.
Michael Josephson
I guess this comes to sticking by your principles. You don’t do things because you are out on some great and glorious quest to change the world. That’s outside you. Do you think that when we do that, we are looking for applause from others who see how wonderful we are because we are working on changing the world?
Doing the right thing has nothing to do with what is outside but has everything to do with what is inside you. If you are “right” on the inside, your actions will reflect that. And by doing those right things because they are right, you may end up changing the world.
Of course, this means that you do have to have principles that you stand by no matter what. Do I have principles that I hold to no matter how the world may push me or prod me to do differently? What are those principles?
