Pain is temporary.  It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place.  If I quit, however, it lasts forever.

Since this quote is from Lance Armstrong, I’m sure he’s talking about the pain from his cancer and treatments.  But there are other types of pain.  There’s the pain of loss and emotional hurt.  There’s the pain that comes from your life not turning out as you expected.  I’m sure you can think of other types of pain.

There’s also the pain that comes from failing.  But failing really is only failure if you give up and quit.  As Mary Pickford said, “…’failure’ is not the falling down, but the staying down.”

Pain is only temporary.  Eventually, it will pass, especially if we do not relive it over and over, if we let it go.  We have to keep working toward our goal.  We have to persevere.  Otherwise, we do fail and that failure is forever.

Maybe we have to try a different tactic to achieve the goal or maybe we even have to modify the goal.  Whatever as long as we don’t give up, as long as we don’t quit.  The pain will pass unless it’s the pain that comes from failure.
