I was complaining that I had no shoes till I met a man who had no feet.
Confucius
In the old days when we used a babysitter, things would happen to us that we thought were bad. But no matter what happened to us or how bad we thought it was, something worse was always going on in our baby sitter’s life.
My daughter got into the children’s tylenol coming home from the sitter’s one night. Never did figure out how. The resultant mess, trying to find ipecac late at night, etc., was a pain in the rear. I will not bore you with everything that happened that crazy night but the tylenol incident was only the beginning.
But it didn’t compare to whatever crazy thing was going on in the baby sitter’s life. She always had something worse going on and we would always realize how much better we had it even with all our little trial and tribulations. It made us so grateful for how well our lives were going.
What this quote means is no matter how bad we think we have it, someone is worse, maybe much worse, off than we are.
I intend to be grateful for what I have. I even made a list: a loving husband who loves his work, a son who is so excited about becoming a firefighter, a daughter who is a loving mother and lover of animals, lots of land to roam on, a view of the mountains out the window by my desk, and on and on.
Try it out yourself. Make a list of all you are grateful for and the next time you are down or think you have it so bad, pull it out. Read it over and realize just how much you do have and how well off you are.
