Make the Difficulty the First Interest

March 6th, 2008 · No Comments

The superior man makes the difficulty to be overcome his first interest; success comes only later.

Confucius

Mike Brescia makes some good points in his essay for this inspirational quote. Perhaps the question of the day expresses it best; “Am I looking too far ahead to focus on the problem at hand?”

And he has a point though maybe the word “problem” has the wrong connotation here. You do need to apply focus and action on the task at hand, on today’s projects. However, I hope that some planning has been done in regards to what course of action is going to be taken.

Some people are so focused on what needs to be done now, as they perceive it, or some problem that has arisen. And they fail to look ahead to see if the problem or task even needs to be addressed, maybe at all.

Sometimes by looking ahead and spending some time planning, an alternate course of action can be taken that sidesteps the difficulty instead of having to overcome it.

Now my proposition does not negate the fact that even the alternate course of action will require focus and action. So do your planning first, but then focus on the first projects within the plan and take action.

And don’t let that focus on the immediate stop you from keeping your eye on the prize, on the good to result from all your planning and action.
