Limbering Up Your Imagination

January 29th, 2008 · No Comments

The body travels more easily than the mind, and until we have limbered up our imagination, we continue to think as though we had stayed home. We have not really budged a step until we take up residence in someone else’s point of view.

John Erskine

The essay that went with this inspirational quote was quite wonderful. In it, Brescia quite simply suggested that when you are stuck and having a hard time imagining an outcome you want, you put yourself in the head of someone who has done it.

You may not know what climbing a mountain entails but you can find out about someone who does. So if he or she were in your place, how would they stand, talk, act, prepare, etc.? What type of envisioning process would they go through?

To me, this sounds very similar to using NLP. Furthermore, Brescia suggests taking five minutes throughout your day to simply do this as an exercise.

If this type of exercise, imagining and placing yourself in someone else’s head, were done on a regular basis, I imagine the outcome would be a much more limber imagination.
