He who seeks advice seldom errs.
Philippine Proverb
Mike Brescia used this proverb as well as the cliche, “Success leaves clues”, to drive home a lesson about learning.
Whatever you are planning to do with your life, whatever goals you set, there is bound to be something you need to know. That is what is so scary about the information that 80% of American households did not buy or read a book last year. You can usually get what you need by seeking out books on the topic or someone who knows about the topic. And, yes, there is a lot of information available on line as well though it is mostly in bites of information.
Brescia used the example of a Canadian fishing trip his uncle took. The uncle and a friend, like all the others staying in the hotel that week, had never fished in this area before. So, even though they are very experienced fishermen, they hired a local guide who had been fishing in that area his whole life. No one else did such a thing and it showed.
Whereas Mike’s uncle caught 294 fish that week, another guest caught only six all week long. And even though the uncle told everyone about the guide, no one hired a guide themselves. They thought they already knew it all. Which leads to a quote from Mike:
You might have already known 90% of the answers. So what you have to listen for and hold dear is the 10% you didn’t know. And use it.
There’s two important points in that quote. Yes, you may know a lot, or even almost everything, about a subject. But, you need to listen for, get to know, the 10% that you don’t.
And this can come from unexpected sources. You might spend $47 on a program that gives you only one thing you didn’t know or a different way to look at things. Which leads to the second thing.
If you use that one thing, it can make the money spent extremely worthwhile and to your benefit. Don’t be afraid to spend the time or money learning. It can profit you in the end if you take action on what you learn.
