Little minds are tamed and subdued by misfortune; but great minds rise above them.
Washington Irving
A look at what is going on now, worldwide, plays this out. With the economic mess, people have pulled out of the stock market and it has tumbled back to 4 figures (while this might not be true when you read this, it is at the original writing of this entry). It just seems to be the case that when bad things happen, we want to retreat or pull back into our shells like a turtle. We stop taking risks. Indeed, some of us stop taking action and just pull back to supposed safety.
But there are those who know that every misfortune brings about an opportunity. They are the ones that usually come through the misfortune ahead of the rest of us and we just don’t understand how they do it.
One thing is that they are prepared in advance to take advantage of whatever happens. They are ready for action and are fully aware of the risks.
The rest of us aren’t prepared. We are always surprised. And we don’t like risk.
I guess that is why they are the great minds and the rest of us are not. How do you become a great mind? I suppose it begins with preparation, having faith in yourself and your abilities, and being willing to take a calculated risk when others are afraid.
