Good Humor Is …

September 25th, 2009 · No Comments

Good humor is a tonic for mind and body.  It is the best antidote for anxiety and depression.  It is a business asset.  It attracts and keeps friends.  It lightens human burdens.  It is the direct route to serenity and contentment.

Grenville Kleiser

And it even cures sickness, or so I’ve read.  At least laughter does.

This quote tells us that good humor can make our lives so much better.  It keeps away anxiety and depression and draws in friends.  It makes our burdens lighter and leads to contentment.  It’s just good for whatever ails us and helps us to get through our troubles.

So with all the good that good humor can provide to us, why do we end up watching shows on TV and at the theaters about death, violence and criminal activities?  Yes, it’s cool when the good guy wins and that can make us feel good for a little while.  But all that violence and strife, the good guys fighting the bad guys, doesn’t bring out the most pleasant emotions within us.

For that matter, why do “they” produce so many shows with strife and violence if good humor makes us feel better?  I include all the so-called reality shows in that as well as they encourage strife and competition and ill feelings.  The few decent comedies, meaning anything not juvenile slap-stick, are not easy to find.  Why are we drawn to those types of shows?  Is it only because they are so prevalent we really have little choice unless we totally refuse to watch any entertainment media?

Well, let’s forget that and think about what I can do.  I can understand how keeping a humorous attitude about the events of my life can lead to some serenity and contentment.  It goes along strongly with a maybe yes, maybe no attitude.

So I guess looking for the silver lining in every supposed “bad” event, looking at the event with good humor, helps to keep it from getting to us.  That philosophy and outlook surely take a mature attitude.

One more thing for me to work on as I am a rather serious person.  Anyone know of any good joke books to add to my collection of books?
