Self-acceptance comes from meeting life’s challenges vigorously. Don’t numb yourself to your trials and difficulties, nor build mental walls to exclude pain from your life. You will find peace not by trying to escape your problems, but by confronting them courageously. You will find peace not in denial, but in victory.
J. Donald Walters
So self-acceptance comes from meeting life’s challenges vigorously? I guess that’s as opposed to meeting what life throws at you with fear. Adventures are going to happen. That’s what this is all about - having adventures. If you try to numb yourself, say with drugs, or use mental walls to shield yourself from whatever happens, you aren’t truly living. You might as well not be here because you are missing everything anyway. Maybe some walls have to be built to block out those things you can do nothing about, but completely blocking out everything just means you are missing out on life, the good and the bad.
I’m not talking about the truly “shell-shocked”. Hopefully that is something that will pass with time. And some of the adventures some of us choose are truly horrifying. I don’t what to do about that. I’m not sure I can do anything about that.
But, for myself, I know I will meet things head on as best I can. I wish, sometimes, I didn’t have to. But whatever happens, I know it will pass and other things will come along. What I can do is learn what I can from the situation and meet the challenges as best I can. I may not win but I will learn and that is a victory indeed.
