A lot of people didn’t believe in us, but our players believed in themselves and that’s all that matters.
Bill Belichick, head coach, New England Patriots
Apparently this sports quote took place after a Super Bowl win by the Patriots over the Rams. From the essay by Mike Brescia, it was a win no one believed could possibly happen. There was so little belief in the Patriots that one journalist thought the Rams would score over a 100 points. Even I know that’s more like a basketball score than a football score.
But the players of the Patriots believed in themselves. They envisioned a successful outcome. They refused to see the task as impossible. They had a burning desire, a desire that led them to win when everyone else counted them out.
Do we count ourselves out? Do we have too little faith in our own success? I confess that there are times I do. Why, I have no idea. I am just as smart, just as “good”, as those who do succeed. But the ultimate faith in myself is not there. Maybe it’s simply because of the beliefs and training of youth.
That’s one reason I am working so hard on this personal development. I need to change my beliefs which make up my life. I have to think and believe that success is possible for me. As Brescia says:
To flip your switch from lose to win, you must be a possibility thinker. And the only way to do that is to constantly be reminded in as many ways as possible that nothing is impossible. Ignite that burning desire.
