Being Quiet

September 12th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Learn to be silent. Let your quiet mind listen and absorb.

Pythagoras

All man’s miseries derive from not being able to sit quietly in a room alone.

Blaise Pascal

Even two such noted scientists and mathematicians as these two realized we each need some quiet time to be alone with our own thoughts and to perhaps learn to go beyond these thoughts to the stillness that lies within us.  Maybe it is by learning to touch this stillness that we learn wisdom and eventually find enlightenment.

In our lives today with all the hustle and bustle, we have to be determined to find that quiet time. Even without children underfoot and the responsibility of going to a job, there are those invaders into the quiet provided by all the media we have available now.  I spend hours and hours online every day.  Do you?

However even those people with families, jobs and all the commitments those bring need to find some quiet time to just “listen and absorb”.  Where can you disappear to in order to find even 15 minutes alone?  Try very hard to find this space where you can sit quietly in a room alone.  Maybe it’s not even a room, but a bench in a park where no one will bother you and where you can be silent and just listen.  And maybe you can find it by getting up 15 minutes earlier while the household is still quiet and just listen to the beautiful quiet.

Having this quiet time available is one of the blessings that we receive after our children are grown and no longer our responsibility if we are careful not to let all the media invade that space.  I am grateful for the quiet time I can have every day.  I am grateful for whatever insights come my way and the wisdom I can learn by having the quiet time to go within.

    Where’s my quiet place?

You will have to find your own place. Perhaps it is a bench in a nearby park. Maybe it is on the beach. Can you find a room within your home where you can go to have quiet? For many mothers, the penultimate quiet place is a bathroom with a tub and lock on the door. Try out some different places and see what works for you.
