Be a Little Kinder Toward Each Other

November 2nd, 2007 · No Comments

All we need to do is be a little kinder toward each other.

Aldous Huxley

The above quote was Huxley’s answer when asked on his deathbed for advice to humanity. I pulled it out of Dyer’s essay rather than use the Stephen Crane poem, “Do Not Weep, Maiden, For War Is Kind” on page 167 of his book, Wisdom of the Ages. I guess I am just not enlightened enough to be as high-minded as Dyer in his criticism of our culture or those who go to war. But I will try not to judge.

Neither war nor violence of any kind is good. I agree with that. That being said, I am the daughter of a military man and the wife of one. I know that many, many soldiers join up, not so they can fight and kill, but to truly serve, whether the service is to their country, their families or themselves.

Regardless of the above, I would suggest reading Dyer’s essay and coming to your own conclusions. At least, Dyer gives a lot of food for thought.

But the above quote has a lot in it as well. It is something we can each do in our own backyards, so to speak. It’s the little things that can make each other feel better. If I do a little kindness for you, you feel better that someone did something nice and I feel better just for doing something nice.

There’s even the commercial that shows people who have simply observed someone else doing a kindness, then going out and doing a kind act as well. Who knows where the ripples could end?

Do 3 kind things for someone else today, even something as simple as holding a door open or picking something up. And be grateful you are in a position to do a little kindness to others.
