All’s Right with the World

September 24th, 2007 · 1 Comment

The year’s at the spring
And day’s at the morn;
Morning’s at seven;
The hillside’s dew-pearled;
The lark’s on the wing;
The snail’s on the thorn;
God’s in His heaven -
All’s right with the world.

Robert Browning

I have to apologize a bit. I’m having a little trouble seeing that “all’s right with the world.” We had to put down my son’s dog Saturday. Her name was Beauty.

For some reason, this has been particularly hard. Perhaps because we had her for over 16 years and my son grew up with her. Perhaps because she seems to represent the end of a time in our lives for us.

But as I’ve been sitting here, I took Dyer’s advice and have taken the time to look outside. It’s starting to feel a bit like autumn, not the spring of the poem, and looks that way as the sun is not so bright and strong as at the height of summer.

The wild grasses and weeds are turning brown and the leaves are starting to fade to yellow. And yet, I’ve seen a rabbit running from the goose pen to another sheltered spot going about his business. The birds are flying around. The horses came running back in from the south 40 and seem quite invigorated. I’m even hearing a cricket chirping and the wind is blowing. We are blessed to be able to see how right the world can be just by looking out a window.

My son will awaken in a couple hours and tend to chores. This afternoon, he’ll head out to his class at the college to learn more on his journey to being a firefighter. I will be working on my projects online.

Each day will go into the next and we’ll eventually know that all’s right with the world. We are so blessed to have had Beauty in our lives.

    I can appreciate your comments about finding that “All is right with the world”. I have been through some of those times where I couldn’t see what was “right” with this or that situation.

    There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.
    William Shakespeare - Hamlet, scene 2

    Most of might think that losing a child to a drunk driver is bad but Candy Lightner used the lose of her 13 year old daughter to drive her to start Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD). MADD had been responsible for getting many laws passed to cut the drunk driving fatalities in the US and other countries. Something we would all think of as tragic has produced an awful lot of good.
