Action and Study

May 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

Action without study is fatal. Study without action is futile.

Mary Beard

This is an inspirational quote to keep close at hand. You don’t want to jump into things without taking at least a few minutes to study the situation and think things through, if that is at all possible. If you don’t take a little bit of time to think through what you are going to do, you may very well, and usually do, make the situation worse.

You’ll end up consuming more resources or spending more time on the situation without resolving it. Or you can even end up making things worse than they were. All this because you didn’t take a few minutes to study the situation and think things through. It’s like the guy who goes out to build a house with no plans at all. He ends up with a mess and no abode.

On the other hand, we have people who endlessly study the problem gathering more information but never start doing anything about it. Governments are rife with this. It is such a common thing that we even have a name for it - analysis paralysis.

There’s always one more fact you need to read about or one more angle from which to look at the situation. So we end up forever learning more before we take action, which of course never really happens. Internet marketing is full of people who buy up every new thing that comes out without making a big effort or any effort to do the things that they have already studied. Then they wonder why they never get anywhere.

For anyone familiar with Air Force terminology/designations, my husband says I am all XP (planning) and no DO (operations). I think he’s the other way around. When we combine and work together, we are really something good. When we don’t…as my son says, “Oh, well.”
