If you want to achieve excellence, you can get there today. As of this second, quit doing less-than-excellent work.
Thomas J. Watson (Founder of IBM)
Kind of short and to the point, yes? If you want to be excellent, then be it. Stop being less than excellent. Stop doing less than excellent work. Make your work and everything you do excellent. Make yourself excellent through the excellent work you do.
Do we fail at this because it is too much work? I ask this because my second thought was, “Yeah, I can do that but then I want to relax.”
Being excellent requires 100% focus on doing the best I can all the time. And that’s hard. It takes a lot of concentration and work keeping myself working at peak efficiency and not slacking off. It’s so easy to let the monkey mind swing off in another direction rather than maintaining the focus excellence requires.
So maybe it just comes down to me being too lazy to be excellent. Hmmm. That sure gives me some pause for thought.
What if I baby step my way into this excellence? Today I work for 5 minutes doing the utmost I can to do excellent work. Tomorrow I add another minute and the next day another. I put my full focus on doing excellent work. Do you think after a month or so, it would become a habit to act this way when I work?
Then I could move on to creating excellence in other areas of my life. Read excellent works. Eat excellent foods. Exercise well. And so on. The only way to achieve excellence is to do excellent work and that is up to me.
