A Moment’s Insight

May 29th, 2008 · No Comments

A moment’s insight is sometimes worth a life’s experience.

Oliver Wendall Holmes

It’s true. Some people think of these insights as sparks of genius shining through. I believe it’s called satori by the Japanese, though maybe kensho would be more appropriate. It’s those brilliant stop-you-in-your-tracks flashes that can happen. If we are wise enough, they can change our whole lives. If we are brave enough, they can change the world.

Have you ever had one? Sometimes on very rare occasions, I have had an ah-ha! moment as I was reading a book. It caused me to look at everything from what seems like a different perspective that did indeed change my outlook on life. Everything seemed slightly skewed from the way it had been before.

It’s hard to hold onto that change of perspective, though, as you continue through your day to day living. Habits and the noise of daily life make it hard to reach that flash of understanding again. I don’t know how you grab and hold onto the change of perspective, that new insight. I would sure love to hear from anyone else who has an idea of how to do so.

The only thing I can think of is to immediately grab a notebook and try to write down how differently everything seems when that flash happens. That means I need to keep a pen and notebook nearby at all times because you never know when that moment’s insight will strike. It’s a good idea to keep a notebook around any way to catch other thoughts such as actions for you to do list.
